How to get started.

You don’t have to be a Flex expert or a user experience die-hard to enter the ScaleNine "Skin to Win Challenge". Just follow the steps below and you're on your way to entering.

Depending on the complexity of your creation, producing a full Flex theme can take anywhere from a day to a couple of weeks - it's up to you how much effort you put in.

To make things easier we've provided source files to create your theme.

Step 2: Get the Software

In order to take part in the contest you need to use the following software. Don't worry, if you don't have any of these, you can download free trials.

  • Adobe Flex Builder 3
  • Adobe Creative Suite 3 (or at least one of the following: Photoshop CS3, Illustrator CS3, Fireworks CS3, Flash Professional CS3)

If you don't have Flex Builder already installed you can download a 60-day trial version to use for the duration of the contest.

You should use the Creative Suite tool that you're most comfortable with. If you don't have one of the Creative Suite 3 products already installed then we recommend that you download Adobe Fireworks CS3 and use that to create skins for the contest. You can also watch the tutorials mentioned in Step 4, which focus on using Fireworks for skinning.

Step 3: Get the Skin Templates

You don’t have to start from scratch! Download the Flex Skin Extensions to get skin templates for you to start with.

There are skin templates for Photoshop, Illustrator, Fireworks and Flash Professional - simply choose the template for the application you’re most comfortable working with, download and install the extension to add the Flex skin templates to your Creative Suite product.

Click here to download the Skin Design Extensions (note: you'll need an Adobe ID to download the templates, if you don't have one already it only takes a minute to get one).

Step 4: Check Out Some Resources

If you’ve never created skins for Flex application, don’t worry - here are some resources to help you get started:

Step 5: Be Creative!

Don’t be shy and show us what you can do! You can enter the contest as many times as you like, with each entry improving your chances of winning.

You can enter skins that you have already created, but please note these must be compatible with Flex 3 - we recommend you test them against the sample application source we've provided.

We do insist that any skins you submit are your own work and that they are unique!

For inspiration check out the ScaleNine Gallery and also visit the Flex.org gallery to see real-world examples of Flex applications.

Step 6: Submit Your Entry

Once you’re happy with you’re creation you can enter it on the Submission Page - make sure that you follow the instructions carefully to ensure that all required files are included.

Please note that by entering the contest you are agreeing to have your Flex theme featured on ScaleNine.com and be available for others to download and use.

Don't forget the deadline is Friday, October 10th, 2008.
